Alberta votes to remain in Canada in preliminary referendum count
Early returns favour staying; the official declaration is due on 29 October.

Alberta voters backed remaining in Canada in preliminary results from Monday’s referendum. The Associated Press reported on 20 October that approximately 76% supported staying, against almost 24% favouring the start of a process towards separation.
The wording matters: voters were choosing between remaining a province and beginning the constitutional process required for a future binding referendum on separation. The ballot was therefore not itself a declaration of independence.
Elections Alberta says the unofficial count must be completed within 48 hours after voting closes. Returning offices then review the count before official results are announced on 29 October at 10 a.m. The provincial ballot also included nine other questions on immigration, public services and constitutional arrangements, whose results should be assessed separately.
This report describes preliminary results available on 20 October, before the official declaration.
